Lyngbye’s Sedge (Carex lyngbyeiI) is a dominant species in tidal marshes around British Columbia. The sedge marsh provides habitat for creatures and helps stabilize the riverbanks, preventing erosion. When young, this sedge provides an important source of protein for migrating and residential birds and other fauna. These sedges thrive in flooded soil. They have a remarkable ability to grow in low oxygen environments thanks to the development of air channels in their leaves, stems, and roots, called aerenchyma. This structure permits oxygen from the air to be exchanged with their roots allowing them to grow in wetland environments. The planted sedges will produce underground rhizomes which help stabilize the soil.
