Supporting People, Places & Nature

Tourism in Squamish is about more than just unforgettable adventures—it’s about supporting the people who live here, protecting the natural places we love, and creating meaningful connections between visitors and the land.

Who Takes Care of Squamish’s Outdoor Spaces?

Squamish’s stunning mountains, forests, waterways, and parks don’t stay beautiful on their own—it’s a collective effort!

How is Tourism Squamish Caring for Squamish’s Natural Spaces?

While you’re out exploring, you might spot Tourism Squamish’s Destination Stewards—you’ll recognize them by their bright yellow shirts and signature #ExploreSquamish info trike! Our Destination Stewards are here to help visitors (and locals!) enjoy Squamish responsibly while keeping our parks and trails pristine.

Here’s how the program helps care for Squamish:

Offering advice, tips, and reminders on how to explore with care and reduce environmental impact.

During summer 2024, stewards observed people complying with posted rules and regulations the majority of the time (87%).

Investing in initiatives that help maintain and enhance Squamish’s beloved trails for future generations.

Once a week in summer 2024, stewards worked alongside different agencies to conduct trail maintenace.

Encouraging everyone to take part in conservation efforts, creating a shared sense of responsibility.

In summer 2024, stewards interacted with over 7,300 visitors and residents at various locations around Squamish.

The Red Bag Program is designed to keep our trails, parks, and community spaces clean. Outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to pack out their rubbish and pick up any garbage left behind by collecting a red bag from stewards and returning a full bag of garbage in exchange for a beverage or ice cream token.

Over 200 full bags of garbage were returned in summer 2024!

Tourism Squamish, as part of the Sea to Sky Destination Management Council, proudly champions the award-winning Don’t Love It to Death initiative throughout the Squamish area.

This program encourages visitors and locals alike to explore responsibly, respect local communities, and help preserve the natural spaces we all enjoy. By promoting mindful recreation and sustainable travel, we’re working together to keep Squamish’s trails, parks, and wild places thriving for future generations.
